Medical tourism guide: Step 7

Flights and accommodation and using an agency

There’s nothing more reassuring than emerging through the ‘arrivals’ door of an airport in a strange country to find a friendly-looking face holding up a sign with your name on it! Even seasoned travellers can find they feel nervous when travelling for medical treatment, and the best clinics are well aware of the importance of hassle-free transfers from airport to clinic or accommodation for their clients – not to mention subsequent transfers from clinic to accommodation during the treatment process. Many of the larger establishments employ a fleet of drivers for this reason, and others have arrangements with local taxi companies. Either way, it’s unusual to be expected to make your own way from the airport on arrival.

Here are some useful questions to ask an agency before booking with them.

  • What’s their track record? Ask how long they have been arranging treatment and how many clients a year they deal with.
  • Are they happy to answer all of your questions, no matter many you have? Good agency see reassuring clients as an important part of their job and are happy to talk.
  • Ask to talk to past patients - good agencies will be happy to put you in touch.
  • Are their press cuttings valid? If an agency has a link to press coverage on their site, go into the link and check that it’s valid. If the links doesn’t come up, alarm bells should ring – there have been case of agencies ‘faking’ press coverage.
  • Do they offer a clear, written (ie via email)  breakdown of costs, what’s included and what’s extra?
