TECHNOLOGY: Cosmetic surgery patients send images of what they want

One problem faced by all cosmetic surgeons and agencies is the perfectly performed procedure where the customer ends up with a look they do not like. Although launched as a ‘plastic surgery game”, a new iPhone app could be of use in distant communication between customers, agencies and clinics.

Technology has revolutionized the way people act, and one recent innovation is image modification. Photo editing programmes offer an instant makeover so people can see how they would look with new hair, larger breasts, or an improved nose.

American cosmetic surgeon Dr. Michael Salzhauer, owner of Miami cosmetic surgery clinic Bal Harbour Plastic Surgery, has designed an advanced beauty makeover app for iTunes: iSurgeon. iSurgeon is for the iPhone/iPod Touch, and combines personal image modification with high tech gaming features.

iSurgeon has two modes: Game Mode and Advanced Surgery Mode. Both include procedures Dr. Salzhauer offers in his own Miami practice including: nose jobs, breast augmentations, cheek implants, tummy tucks, liposuctions, face lifts, lip enhancements, and ear reshaping. The iSurgeon App costs only a few cents.

Dr. Salzhauer comments, “the iTunes app store was lacking a truly useful and well-designed beauty makeover app. iSurgeon delivers on the promise of realistic photo alterations while also allowing users to play cosmetic surgery games in the role of a surgeon.iSurgeon provides those interested in cosmetic surgery treatments with a clear visual of what they would look like post-surgery.”

In Advanced Surgery Mode, you can modify images taken with your iPhone/iPod Touch or images already stored in your phone. Within seconds, you can see what you would look like after various cosmetic surgeries. The results can be easily shared as both Facebook and email are conveniently built into the app. What may be of great use to medical tourism is that you can do the same procedure on someone else. So as long as you have an accurate picture of the person, you can use it to show them what they would look like after surgery.

More scarily, Game Mode gives you the opportunity to be a surgeon operating on any of the four pre-programmed images to enhance their cosmetic appearance. Before each surgery procedure, users can tap the hint button on their screen to view an image of their patients desired results. The aim of the game is to emulate the desired look as closely as possible. Using the iPhone/iPod Touch’s touch screen capabilities, the user can modify the subject’s physical appearance, scoring points for each successful enhancement. Game Mode is complete with realistic sound effects.

iSurgeon’s creator Dr. Michael Salzhauer is not afraid of controversy, already being well known for writing the book "My Beautiful Mommy" to help children deal with their mother’s surgery.

The launch comes weeks after the first plastic surgery app, The Shafer Plastic Surgery app, created by Dr. David Shafer of New York, that has more than 1,000 questions and answers about specific cosmetic procedures.
